Curved Valet

Time is valuable and not everyone gets to spend countless days in the shop.  That’s why I like one day projects like this curved valet.  It’s perfect to put in the entrance way as a catch all or on a desk to keep things organized.  This is one of those woodworking projects that you can build entirely in one day and it look like you spent weeks slaving over it.

My tray is made from ½” thick walnut and a 12” square piece of marble that you I picked up for a few dollars at a tile store.  The construction itself is pretty simple.  I used large box joints, which is one of my favorite woodworking joints.  I have an entire video devoted to how to make this joint here: https://youtu.be/IZSPTQJDwvA

To get the curves of the tray just right I drew a template using Inkscape.  If you want to give this woodworking project a shot then you can download the templates for free on my website: Curved Valet Template — NEWTON MAKES

The little tray was a quick addition.  It consists of walnut and a scrap piece of porcelain tile.  I used aluminum rod to serve as dowel pins in the joints, making the tray much stronger.

This is a really fun woodworking project if you are looking to make something in one day or something that you can batch out.  You can customize the wood tray by adding in different tiles that will give this a unique look.
