Space-Saving Lumber Cart

I make a lot of small scale projects so I need to keep offcuts from boards.  Up until now, I’ve used a plastic bin to hold my small pieces, but today that’s going to change!  This video shows you how I made a space-saving lumber cart.  This cart is low profile and has a small footprint, making perfect for smaller shops where floor space is at a premium.

I created bins in the front of the cart to hold short, wider pieces of scrap wood. The middle of the cart has removable dividers. This section is great for storing long narrow pieces, or I can remove a divider and store wider boards.

Panel scraps are a big problem for me. I often have offcuts of plywood and particle board. These are great to have in the shop because they can be used for templates or jigs at a moment’s notice. To help keep all of these panels organized, I made the back of the cart an open storage area. Now, I won’t have plywood mixed with my scrap hardwood boards.

The icing on the cake was including casters. I like having tools on wheels; I can easily move this cart out of my way when I need to get to a certain area of the shop or when I’m simply cleaning up.

If you are interested in making a lumber cart then I highly recommend watching the above video and downloading the build plans. It’s a handy item to have, especially in smaller shops, and can be customized to suit your needs.
