I’m tackling the hot button (or at least confusing) topic of how to sharpen a chisel or hand plane blade. I always recommend finding a sharpening method that works best for you. Or, pick the method that you hate the least! A sharp tool is a better tool so find the process that will help you to keep your tools sharp.

After trying different methods, the one I’m currently using involves a combination of diamond and whet stones. I have three grits of diamond stones: Fine, Extra Fine, and Extra Extra Fine. The quality of the chisel edge impacts which stone is used. If my chisel has some deep nicks or it’s brand new, then I will start with Fine. If it’s a good edge, but dull, I’ll start with Extra Fine.

I use the Veritas honing jig when I’m using stones. I clamp the chisel into the jig and make about 10-20 passes on the stone. I check the edge to ensure that I’m getting an even amount of grinding across the chisel face. Once I have, I move up to the next stone. In between stones, I’ll gently rub the back of the chisel on the stone just to remove the burr. I do this up to Extra Extra Fine.

For whatever reason, I don’t feel like I get a super sharp edge right off the diamond stone. Because of this, I finish up with a 8,000 grit water stone. I used to use whetstones for sharpening, but it’s a bit messy, especially after flattening the stones. I like the ease of diamond stones, but not the final result. That’s why I combine the two and only use the whetstone for the final pass.

I also love to use a leather strop. By stropping my chisels, I can keep a sharp edge without having to go back to my sharpening stones. I actually like to free hand when I strop my chisels. Some people like to freehand sharpen their chisels on stones too. That’s awesome if you want to do that. I will strop my chisels until I absolutely have to go back to sharpening. Stropping lets me keep working on my project without stopping.

Whatever method you choose, try your best to keep your chisels and hand plane blades sharp. You will work easier and get better results.
