Custom Table Molding

I’m making a walnut end table that coordinates with my existing console table. What I think sets this table apart is the custom furniture molding. The table will have some really cool custom stacked molding along the apron, under the table top. I made this molding by making two types of molding profiles: crown molding and dentil molding.

I used the router table to route the crown molding, using multiple passes because it’s such a large router bit. Much safer this way. It took me about 6 passes before I felt the molding was ready to move onto the next stage, which was cutting it to size at the table saw. The molding has to sit under the table top and against the apron. To do this, I set my saw at a 45 degree angle and cut each side of the crown molding. Then, with the molding held against my table saw fence at a 45 degree angle, I made one more cut at 90 degrees to shape the bottom edge. This edge will have the dentil molding pressed against it.

To make the dentil molding, I planed down some lumber so that it’s slightly thinner than the bottom edge of the crown molding. I made a jig that attaches to my miter gauge. It’s simply a piece of plywood with a 5/16” wide notch cut out of it using the dado stack. I used CA glue to attach a piece of wood in that notch. Then, I moved my plywood jig to the right, along my miter gauge. This gave me a 5/16” wide piece of wood, a 5/16” wide space between that wood and the blade, and a 5/16” wide dado stack. Now, I’m able to set my workpiece against the wood and make a cut. Then, I can lift the workpiece up and place it on top my wood reference piece, and make another cut. I kept doing this until I had 5/16” dados cut along the length of the workpiece.

I was then able to cut the dentil molding to final size using the table saw. I highly recommend making your own custom furniture molding. It’s not difficult to do and it will give your furniture a unique look that’s personalized just for you!
