Rusted Bolt Wooden Box

Want to be a Better Woodworker? Make This!

I believe the best way to hone your woodworking skills is to confine yourself so you have to figure out creative ways to build a project under unique circumstances.  To do that, I took the concept of a regular box and forced myself to make it unique by incorporating bolts.  It took some brainpower but I ultimately came up with an idea to have box sides with wooden brackets.  When assembled, the box will look like it’s held together with bolts.

The video above shows not only how I made the box, but more importantly, it shows how I brainstorm concepts in order to creatively make a woodworking project. Building creativity skills was really the goal with this one.

As the woodworking project progressed, I added more unique elements.  I decided on a leather strap for a lid handle, held in place with more bolts.  And for the bolts themselves, I purposefully rusted them.  This can be done with two stage process.  I cleaned the bolts and dissolved their zinc coating by soaking them in citric acid and water.  Then I sprayed them with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, and salt.  Afterwards, I sprayed them with a clear coat to seal the bolts.
