Tool Sharpening Station

Build a Hand Tool Sharpening Station

When I need to sharpen my hand tools, I have to get out all of my sharpening stones and make a production out of it.  Water ends up getting on the work bench and because I have to set everything up, I tend to put off sharpening well past when I should.  To fix this, I made a pretty simple hand tool sharpening station.

The sharpening station is a wood box with a large drawer that holds my sharpening stones, jig, and whatever else I need.  The top is a 12x12 granite tile.  The tile is smooth so I know my sharpening stones will lay flat on it, plus I can use the work surface for sharpening with sandpaper if I want to.  Stone is easy to clean so I don’t have to worry about that dirty metal slurry that is the result of sharpening chisels and hand plane blades.  I think what I like best is that I can keep my finest stones out for a quick touch up.  I use diamond stones; it’s easy to leave the polishing stone and a leather strop on the sharpening station for when I need it.

This is a great woodworking project.  It’s useful and pretty fun to make as well.  It can be built in a relatively short period of time and you can immediately put it to good use in your workshop.
