This year, I want to push myself creatively.  I’d really like to make more mixed media projects, that combine wood with other materials.  I had an idea for a walnut box that has an inlay aluminum pattern.  What I came up with was a spiral consisting of two different size aluminum dowels.

The walnut that I chose is highly figured.  I wanted that to really be the star of the show so the aluminum shouldn’t take away from the wood.  The pattern needed to be a cool decorative detail, but not the main focus.  I made the pattern approximately 2x2” and placed it in the corner of the lid of the box.  Some spray adhesive keeps the template in place while I drill the holes for the dowels.

If you would like to make this at home, you can download the template for free on my website here.

The dowels are easily purchased at the craft store.  I bought mine from Hobby Lobby.  I added complementing dowels to the side to strengthen the miters, and they also coordinate with the lid.  I thought about putting dowels in the interior lining of the box, but I was worried that it would be too much.  Maybe I’ll try it in a future project.

The box was finished using General Finishes Arm-R-Seal.

I hope that you can take the time to make something similar, either using the pattern I provided or using your own pattern.  If you do, send me some pictures.  You can find me on Instagram @genealogistwoodworker.
